Newsletter 4: The Beauty of Repetition
This is where change actually begins
One small Pilates cue + one habit shift for your week.
Hi friend,
Pilates tip of the week: The Roll Up: Anchor, Articulate, Repeat
The Roll Up is a beautiful practice in mind-body control.
Lie on your back with your legs long and anchored. Reach your arms toward the ceiling. Take a breath, then slowly articulate your spine off the mat, reaching forward as you continue to anchor through your legs.
Then control the return, placing your spine back onto the mat one vertebra at a time.
Each repetition asks your brain to focus, coordinate, and refine the movement. Those small moments of progress create a sense of accomplishment—and help keep us motivated to practice.
Try 5 intentional repetitions:
Anchor your legs.
Articulate your spine.
Control the movement.
Notice the connection.
Five repetitions. One mindful practice.
Habit tip of the week: Part 2 of Our Dopamine Series
The core idea: Dopamine isn't really the "reward" chemical — it's the motivation chemical, spiking when you anticipate a reward, not when you receive one. That's why the first minutes of any practice are hardest: your brain hasn't learned to expect the payoff yet.
Where repetition changes things: Each time you repeat an action, the dopamine spike shifts earlier — from the reward itself to the cue that precedes it. By the third or fourth repetition, your brain predicts the reward, and the wanting becomes automatic. Motivation doesn't arrive before you start; it arrives because you started, and it compounds with every repetition.
The piece includes a Movement minute (Pilates as cue-training), a one-small-habit idea (repeat one tiny action in the same place for seven days), and four plain-English takeaways on dopamine prediction, repetition, and cues over goals.
See you on the mat,
Amie & Amy
